An Exploration of Ethical Individualism, Thinking as a Spiritual Activity, and Human Morality from the Perspective of Rudolf Steiner’s Philosophie der Freiheit
Friday, December 7–Sunday, December 9
This is the third annual technology retreat co-sponsored by Threefold Educational Foundation and the Hawthorne Valley Center for Social Research. Similar to last year, a dynamic event is planned with a diversity of activities, including presentations, panel discussions, artistic exercises, workshops, exhibits, and conversations.
Rudolf Steiner’s Philosophie der Freiheit is the background reading material. It is the work that Steiner said would be remembered the longest of all of his works. English translations are Philosophy of Freedom, Philosophy of Spiritual Activity, and Intuitive Thinking as a Spiritual Path.
Rudolf Steiner writes: “One must be able to confront an idea and experience it; otherwise one will fall into its bondage.” In our times, the ideas of technology have become an essential part of our lives, but we don’t fully understand the effects technology has on us. During this retreat, we will investigate essential questions raised in the Philosophy of Spiritual Activity to gain a view of the human being that can enable us to understand more fully the effects of technology on the human being without losing the idea of individual freedom.
A digest of pertinent passages from the Philosophy will be made available in November as preparatory reading, both for those who are familiar with the work and those to whom it is new. The digest is meant to be a stimulus to read, or reread, the whole work.
Schedule: The retreat begins with registration at 3:45pm on Friday, December 7, and ends at 12:30pm on Sunday, December 9.
Fee: The Regular Rate is a sliding scale, $75 to $125 (includes dinner on Friday, lunch and dinner on Saturday, and snacks). Young Adults (age 40 and under) may register for $45.00. Our intention is that no one will be turned away for financial reasons. If you need further financial assistance to attend, please contact Gary Lamb: email@example.com or 518-672-4465, ext 223.
