Our Debts and Our Debtors

I have long wondered about the phrase from Matthew 6:12, the Lord’s Prayer, “forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.” It does not say “forgive me my debts as I forgive my debtors.” What could be meant by the collective “our debts”? Who are “our debtors” as distinguished from “my debtors?” Could there be a “cosmic” explanation?

Let’s explore this cosmic possibility. When Rudolf Steiner discussed the previous planetary condition that esotericists call Old Moon, he mentions that the beings who are now Angels were then at the human stage. Roughly mid way through Old Moon’s times, evolution continued but devolution took precedence. This is similar to how during one’s life the forces of youth give way to the forces of old age when we reach the downhill part of our lives. At this point of cosmic devolution, higher beings of the heavenly hierarchy who have completed their mission are able to progress to the next level of the hierarchy and, at the same time, those beings who will be human at the next planetary condition begin to weave into life. During Old Moon, those next humans were us! And Steiner mentions that during this descending times on Old Moon, we were ‘troublesome’ for the angels.Seven spheres trimmed

What was the outcome of this trouble that we gave to those who are now angels? They became our guardian angels! As our individual angel, they will stay with us, for better or worse, to rise or fall with us. They truly are our guardian who guides us from death to rebirth through the vast spheres of the spiritual world. They are known as the Sons of Twilight. Through their senses they observe the lightness and the darkness, the colors, of our thinking.

In Steiner’s book Knowledge of Higher Worlds, we are introduced to a being one meets when they attempt to enter the spiritual world. The Guardian of the Threshold protects us from entering this world unprepared for the experience. For being unprepared will likely make the experience “shattering” thereby negatively affecting one’s ability to carry on with daily life in a healthy way. This Guardian first meets us on our side of the abyss of existence; that is, on the side where our everyday consciousness can extend up to where the twilight of the abyss exists. I have come to the conclusion that the Guardian of the Threshold begins as our guardian angel when we begin our meditative activity. As one progresses in becoming aware of the spiritual world, the Guardian of the Threshold’s guidance continues.

Eventually, as Steiner describes, when one is near the point where one’s ability to fully and healthfully participate in the spiritual world, then one finds that the Guardian has become the Christ. This incorporation of Christ within our guardian angel is significant not only for us but also for our angel and for the work of Christ.

“Our debt” began on Old Moon. By taking up meditation seriously and effectively now, we pay back this debt. Our guardian angel is united with us. Whether we, in freedom, choose to unite with Christ or take another path, our angel will go with us – for better or worse. Through meditation in harmony with the Guardian of the Threshold, we unite our angel’s destiny as well as our own destiny with Christ. In doing so, we can pay off “our debt”.

But what about “our debtors”? The Earth planetary condition is now well into devolution and so those beings who will be at the human stage in the next planetary conditions, Jupiter, are now, invisibly, among us. As we were troublesome to today’s angels when they were at the human stage on Old Moon, so will the Jupiter-humans be troublesome to us. They become “our debtors” and we will need to forgive them. Because they are thrust up from below, they pass through the realm of Ahriman and take on his character. Such Ahrimanic beings are definitely among us, challenging us to become strong in spirit. Our debtors will inherit a human stage for their development; a stage we help to build with the love we learn from the Christ. Thus, “Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors” has not only personal significance but also cosmic.

Heredity, Rakshasas, and Nostradamus

Expulsion-from-EdenWith Adam and Eve, original sin enters which consisted of one being dissimilar to the generation which had gone before.  Lucifer had intended from his nature to speed along human evolution; to give to humanity too soon the sense of an ego within the soul. Expulsion from Paradise meant that Earth forces could now intermingle with their Heavenly forces; separation from God occurred. Awareness and shame of being different arose. Between Adam and Seth unfolds the drama of Cain and Abel. Through these dramas, a new principle entered into mankind, the principle of heredity, of bloodline.  Keep in mind, that Cain and Abel represent not just individuals but streams. Not all of those belonging to the Abel line were eradicated; there still remain some Sons of God.

To the question: ‘Where is Abel, thy brother?’ Cain answered: ‘Am I my brother’s keeper?’ Cain reveals with this reply something new in humanity coming with the Cain stream – egoism. No man would have said that previously. Now the principle of opposition is added to the principle of love from the Father; now, through Lucifer’s deed, egoism is born: “Am I my brother’s keeper?”Cain_and_Abel,_15th_century

What happens to those who were still of the Abel line? They were known as Sons of God for they remained akin to the divine. To protect this divine nature and the gifts it brought, they now had to guard themselves against allowing the earthly forces to enter them. From this resulted what was to later become the principle of asceticism. They dedicated their lives to the service of God and in time a dedicated one would have nothing to do with those who were soiled, who had committed themselves to the affairs of earth. It was a sin when ‘The Sons of God saw the daughters of men, saw that they were ‘fair’ and took from them wives.’  They took wives from the daughters of Cain.

According to the Akashic Record research done by Rudolf Steiner, this union resulted a race of men hinted at in the Old Testament; a race that is not perceptible to physical eyes. This race is called ‘Rakshasas’ in occult language and is similar to the ‘Asuras’ of Indian lore. These Rakshasas worked as seducers of mankind. They continued to influence human desires until the time when Christ incarnated in Jesus of Nazareth and the Buddhi principle, the Life Spirit itself became present on the earth in a human body.

Steiner makes this point about the Rakshasas, “now you may believe it or not: this is something of cosmic significance, of significance which reaches beyond the earthly plane. It is not for nothing that the Bible expresses it thus: ‘Christ descended into the forecourts of Hell.’ It was not human beings He met there, He was confronted by spiritual beings. The Rakshasa beings were brought thereby into a state of paralysis and lethargy!  They were at the same time kept in check so that they became unable to move. They could only be lamed in this manner because they were being opposed from two sides. That would not have been possible if there had not been two natures combined together in Jesus of Nazareth: on the one hand the old Chela nature, deeply connected with the physical plane, which could also work effectively on the physical plane and through its power could hold it in balance: on the other hand there was Christ Himself who was a purely spiritual being. That is the cosmic problem which is fundamental to Christianity. Something occurred at that time in occult spheres; it was the banishment of the enemies of mankind which has its echo in the Saga of the Antichrist, who was put in chains but will make his appearance again, if not opposed once more by the Christian principle in its primal force.

The whole occult striving of the Middle Ages was directed towards nullifying the effect of the Rakshasas. Those whose visionNostradamus by Cesar extends to the higher planes have long foreseen that the moment when this could happen might be at the end of the nineteenth century, at the transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century. Nostradamus, who worked from a tower which was open to the heavens, who brought succor during the Great Plague, was able to foretell the future. He wrote a number of prophetic verses in which you can read about the war of 1870 and several prophecies about Marie-Antoinette which have already been fulfilled. In these ‘Centuries’ by Nostradamus (Century 10, 75) the following prophecy can be found: At the close of the nineteenth century a Hermes Brother will come from Asia and bring unity to mankind. Through Madame Blavatsky, the Theosophical Society was intended to be nothing less than a fulfillment of this prophecy of Nostradamus. The annulment of the Rakshasas and the reestablishment of the primal mysteries was an aim of the Theosophical Society.” (see Rudolf Steiner, The Temple Legend, Berlin, June 10, 1904, Lecture 2)

Fulfillment of Mosaic Law

The following passage from Paul’s Letter to the Romans is about the fulfillment of the Mosaic Law through Christ-Jesus. Below I offer an explanation of what this letter means.

1 Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? 2 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. 3 So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.

4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God. 5 For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. 6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

God’s Law is Holy

7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. 8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead. 9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. 10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. 11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

Struggling with Sin

13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. 15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. 16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it isgood. 17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. 19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. 20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. 22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Explanation

Before Moses, humankind was led by the Mysteries which were led by gods. In our soul at this time, we had developed sentient capabilities but needed the teachings of the mysteries to guide our deeds based on the sensory impressions. At that time, it was not sinful to act according to the instincts and passions (if that word even applied in those days, certainly its manifestation was different) that arose in our soul. Through the bloodline we felt our tribal-ness. Into this poured the guidance of our folk spirit.

At the time of Moses, roughly 600BC, the beginnings of an individual intellectual soul had begun. Development of this intellectual soul would continue as the most important new soul development until the 15th century. Into this aspect of the human soul our lower ego would build its throne. With this, we now became responsible because now we could understand with our own intellect. Karma was, of course, already working but now it moves from mostly tribal manifestations to mostly individual. With the advent of the Intellectual Soul, Mosaic Law was needed for the guidance of this new Intellectual Soul and because, at the same time, the awareness of reincarnation was vanishing. Making the most of one’s life now needed to become important. Hence the awareness arose in the Hebrews to become free of being slaves in Egypt.

Mosaic Law is about karma. It is for all of us when going the path of developing freedom where one must deeply enter life in the physical body and embrace materialism in order to separate from the spiritual world. Each person must experience one lifetime without any direct spiritual experience. But this path is a path of death. This intellectual soul’s activity towards understanding happens through tearing things from their wholeness to examine them. It can grasp what is removed from life. Through Him in whom life is, we may overcome death and step out of this cycle of birth and death. The Intellectual Soul and its ego cannot take us there; they remain in the cycle. Only through the death of the ego and the awakening to higher self, to Christ in me, can we arise from the Law. So while my soul is married to my body, the Law applies. But when my soul is mystically married to our Christ spirit, then I become free, free from death and the Law. While the development of the Intellectual Soul continues, since the 15th century a new development of human soul has begun which spiritual science calls the Consciousness Soul. As this aspect of soul develops, individuals will achieve what Paul writes about, to be “delivered from the law”.
